Final Exam study guide

1) First you click the server drive then you wait for the little screen to pop up okay it then got to my computer. When you get there go to the folder for Photo J and find your folder and open it.

2) We use blogger.com to post about what we've learned and done in class . It's for our assignments.

3) All you need is an oatmeal can, Two pieces of black construction tape and black tape to cover the top side of the lid and bottom. Also need to blackout the inside of the cans wall and floor. Once that's done you close it, cut about an inch square out of the can and open it again and fill the hole with a thin layer of Foil. Poke one hole through the foil, once that's done you can seal that foil strip off with a tape made flap. Once all these steps are done you have your pinhole camera.

4) Once you open the flap on your camera, light will flow into the hole you poked and will spread the image your aiming at on the paper, but can only do so for maybe 3 to 4 seconds or else the image will be too dark or will turn pitch black.

5a) Rule of thirds- Imagine that your image is divided into nine equal segments by two vertical and two horizontal lines, this adds balance and interest to your photo.

b) Balancing Elements- Balance the 'weight' of your subject by including another object of lesser importance to fill the space.

c) Leading Lines- A photo our eye is naturally drawn along lines.

d) Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)- They can make for very eye-catching compositions, particularly in situations where they are not expected. Another great way to use them is to break the symmetry or pattern in some way, introducing tension and a focal point to the scene.

e) Viewpoint- Consider photographing from high above, down at ground level, from the side, from the back, from a long way away, from very close up, and so on.

f) Background- Something in the foreground that doesn't distract or detract from the subject.

6) Action and emotion tell a story about the photo like uif a person is jumping and smiling, you can tell that they are happy.

7) A photo can tell a story by using emotions and actions, Like photographs at parties, weddings, graduation etc. All of these events tell a story when a photo is taken at that place.

9)
Alyssa and Bob after there wedding at the dinner table. Bob fell asleep on his wife.

While little Johnny aka lil squirt was using the toilot, he fell in cause he fell asleep and woke up crying when he relised he was in the toilot.

10) Just like a comic it shows the type of action the character is partaking.

11) Ethics should not be used in photojournalism due to the fact that they are very misleading. This is wrong when you are trying to tell a true story. In fashion photography this is used greatly to encourage the selling of products.

12) A portrait is a picture of someone else. While a self portrait is a picture of yourself and how you describe yourself.

13) A good portrait is in focus, has good exposure, and uses composition rules.

14) The major differences in newspaper and yearbook are: newspaper is for things going on recently around school and has things like interviews and articles in which you can read. While yearbook is main things that happen through out the whole year. There is more photographs involved in Yearbook than in newspaper.

My first print

1B) There isn't anything really focus in this picture. The window in the background ruined the photo and made it dark. What i was trying to do was to take a picture of the class learning from the student. But some didn't listen and paid attention to me taking the photo.

2)Yes you can see the contrast But not so clearly.

3B) No because of the lighting. Next time i wont use a classroom or any of that sort that has a lighting in a dark room that may turn the picture dark.

4) yes because i was rushing towards the end of the period. Cause the bell rang.

5) Yes because i was rushing towards the end of the period. Cause the bell rang.

6) Yes

Caption
who is in the photo?
  • Karla is smiling for the camera
  • Trae is smiling for the camera
  • Luis is teaching the class
  • white boy is helping Luis.
Luis and white boy are trying to teach the class on a A day while the teacher watches.

Karla and Trae were distracted while i was taking the picture.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1)The amusement park that i would like to visit is the Takakanonuma Greenland, in Hobara, Japan. Because it really looks cool and scary. The rust on the roller coasters, gives the pictures that are taken there really good effects. The other thing that is really cool, is the fog, and it gives the photos really good effect along with the rust.

2)

3) Sea World, Schlitterbahn, Six flags fiesta Texas, House of torment, Hunted house

 4) fiesta texas

5) I think it would be fun document this place, because some of it is really old, like the rides, or the buildings, and the entrances when you are going to get on a ride are old. I think it would take somewhat of a lot of money to travel there, like for gas when you are driving there, and I would have to buy some new film for my camera, and I would need food, and to get into the park I would also need to bring the camera for the pictures, and maybe I would need to bring another camera, just in case some thing happen to the other one, and I would also need to bring a bag for the camera, and I would need to bring enough film for however many photos that i am going to take. With all of those things, I would be ready to go.

Portraits and self-portraits - start looking

self-portrait
professional portrait

What makes a good portrait is how it got tooken. There's a good subject in this photo, its not blurry or has nothing particular distracting it but what they want to show you. I think a good photo is made by passion, this was made with passion. I'm going to try and put passion in all of my photos.

Ethics in fashion photography

1. The model's neck was made longer, her hair was moved, her eyes were made larger and moved, her face was made thinner, and the color was evened.
2. I don't like the fact that they do this to girls, maybe if they tell the girl, and let her choose weather she wants to be distorted or not, then it might be alright. But I would say no.
3. There is no circumstances for changing the way someone looks.

4. The changes that are okay is putting make up on and making there appearance better for the photo but its not okay to edit everything else like the persons physical features to make there look different with better features.

5. Fashion photography is when photographers take pictures of a women and men, showing off clothing of a company.
6. Photojournalism is related to reality in the sense that it grasps in photos what is taking place in the world around us. In fashion photography it relates to reality in the sense that it shows how we view beauty and how people think reality should be. This affects the ethical practice of each in the sense that they have to be careful of whether what they are changing will completely distort their intent by their photo and if it is an honest photo.

Negatives Evaluation

1)  My photos came out really bad. It was pretty much pitch black.

2)  None of them turned out well. Maybe the one that had the window on it. The reason why it turned that way was because of bad composition.

3)  My slide 14 would be okay cause its the only one that has something in it instead of black everywhere.

4)  What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did I think are present in my best negative was a little composition. Because it shows the windows, but the students are a little bury.

5)  I think i used the rule of thirds on the photo that came out okay.

Photo Manipulation and ethics

A)     The main points of the story is that manipulations is kinda the same as like april fools. April fools day your basiclly lying to people, But what happened here someone minipulated a photo that worked for the news paper, And eventually got fired for scaring probably a lot of people.

B)      I think that this type of photo editing is acceptable but to a certain point.  For example adding another missile to a military launch is unnacceptable, another country could be bothered by it or the military could be brought to attention for supposebly launching more missiles than they really did.  I think it depends on the viewers level of discretion whether or not a photo is unethical or acceptable

A)   The manipulation that was most unethnical because this never happened. The Daily new decieved people minds by making them think that this really happened when it didn't.

B)    I think this picture is the least unethical because it's basically just a picture, a cover. It doesn't contain people or anything that would make it offensive. They manipulated this picture by moving the pyramids closer together to accommodate this vertical National Geographic cover. I think it doesn't hurt anything by doing that. They just want it to look better the way they think it would.

Drug Cartels in Mexico

In this video violence is shown through out so many aspects and some clips that are just plain horrible. I think whats happening in Mexico is tremendously sad and wrong. Its not the way the world should become. Its really wrong for people killing people. whats the point? Why don't they care? People out side of Mexico don't even care and do something. There was two students killed at a university in El Paso, what was the reason for killing two Innocent students? There is also a drug business going on in Mexico. Innocent people are being killed for no apparent reason. Its heartless.

My favorite picture from the video that i took seriously was the young girl with a pink jacket. She had black earrings on and her hair pulled up in the middle of the frame of the picture with bangs in her face. She is looking away from the camera to the left. Eyes wide open with one tear going down her face to where you can almost know what is going through her head. She has a look of hurt upon her face with so much emotion. The reason I really like this photo is because the photographer caught the emotion in her eyes. He showed how the people are feeling in Juarez.

Making a Black and White print

Dark Room
Equipment
1)
  • Enlargers
  • Filters
  • Safe Lights
  • Film Processing Tank
  • Thermometers
  • Print Trays
  • Timers
  • Print Washing Tray
  • Print Tongs

Film Processing Chemicals

2)
  • Film Developer
  • Stop Bath
  • Fixer
  • Hypo Clearing Agent
  • Wetting Agent
  • Chemical "Life Span"
  • Chemical Disposal

3.     First, you have to make sure that there's no light in the room where the process will occur. Than all of the chemicals are set up right, and make sure that you have everything you need. Check the temperature of the chemicals have to be at an accurate temperature. Once you have everything set up you can start the process.
Now you can load the film onto the film reel, and put the film reel into the developing tank. Depending on the temperature of your chemicals that's how long you can keep the film in the chemicals. The order of how you put your film are developer, stop bath, fixer, and than the hypo-clearing agent. Finally put your film in the water for ten minutes than remove the extra water from the film.

1. Emulsion- a composition sensitive to some or all of the actinic rays of light, consisting of one or more of the silver halides suspended in gelatin, applied in a thin layer to one surface of a film or the like.
2. Aperture- an opening, usually circular, that limits the quantity of light that can enter an instrument.
3. Masking Easel- an upright tripod for displaying something
4. Exposure- the total amount of light received by a photosensitive surface or an area of such a surface, expressed as the product of the degree of illumination and the period of illumination.
5. Safe Light- a darkroom light with a filter that transmits only those rays of the spectrum to which films, printing paper, etc., are not sensitive.
6. Dodging- to shade from exposure for a period, while exposing the remainder of the print in order to lighten or eliminate the area.
7. Burning- the baking of ceramic products to develop hardness and other properties.

Post Shoot Reflection

1.     Some of the challenges i had to go through while trying to take a picture are that i had to think about how close to i want the object and figure out how to capture action or emotion. I just thought about what i've have learn in class and put it together to get the picture right.
2.    Focus was really hard for me. I couldn't focus in many of pictures.

3.   I tried to use the avoiding mergers techniques. I didn't want the background to ruin the main part of the picture which was the student working. I tried to avoid them the best i could.

4.   Next time i wouldn't rush to take my photos.

Processing Black and White photos

     Materials
  • A metal or plastic film tank
  • Three dark plastic containers to hold chemistry
  • Graduates (used to measure chemicals)
  • A darkroom timer
  • A can opener
  • A room that is totally light proof (not even the slightest sliver of light should be visible).
  • Developer (see other sidebar)
  • Glacial Acetic Acid (optional, for Stop Bath)
  • Fixer (Kodak Rapid Fixer with Hardener is highly recommended)
  • Hypo Eliminator
     Chemicals
  • Developer, which causes the silver iodide of the film or paper emulsion to darken if it has been exposed to light.
  • fixer, which removes the undeveloped silver iodide from the emulsion.
  • A chemical used to completely stop the development process is called stop bath, and is used between the developer stage and the fixer stage in both b&w film & paper processing.
  • You can buy these chemicals at any good camera store, if not you can also buy online.

    Process

First, load your film and mix developer. Second, Mix your developer, stop bath, and fixer in the appropriate quantities and concentrations. Then, check times/temperatures and remove the fill cap on your tank (not the lid). Pour the developer into the tank, replace the fill cap, do 5-10 inversions, and start the timer. Do another 5-10 inversions every minute for the remainder of the development cycle. At 30 seconds, remove the fill cap and prepare to dump the developer. Then at 15 seconds, start pouring the developer out. Then, use the stop bath which only requires 30 seconds. After that, poor in water and wash it. Finally, dump the remaining water from the tank and remove the film reel.

Equipment necessary to process film

1. Contact sheet: Any print made in which the negative is in physical contact with the paper is a contact print
2. Agitation: Continuous motion of a chemical tank or bath to ensure that the chemical solution inside it is evenly spread across the surface of the film or paper.
3. Enlarger: An apparatus used for making photographic enlargements.
4. Developer: Chemical solution used to render a latent image on film or paper visible.
5. Stop Bath: A chemical bath that stops development of a photographic emulsion.
6. Fixer: Chemical solution used to fix a developed image permanently onto film or a print. If you don’t use fixer then the developed image will vanish when exposed to light.

Repetition

A 27-day-old female Reticulated Giraffe stands beside her mother at Kanazawa Zoological Park in Yokohama, Japan.

This is a example of repetition because there are shapes all over the giraffes. Its all repeated all over there body and wont ever change.

Judges rate Alpine cheese in Oberstdorf, Germany. Jury members at the 5th Alpine Cheese Olympics rated over 700 kinds of Alpine cheese from all over the world.

This is a example of repetition because there is multiple sizes and shapes that are repeating. There might be a different shape in a row but they are always repeating.

A Pakistani balloon vendor waits for Valentine's Day customers on a roadside in Islamabad.

This is a example of repetition because of the shapes and color of the hearts. They are all the same and repeated. The Trees are also repeated in the background.

American Soldier slideshow and captions

2A.
I think the most powerful picture is the one in "signing up" because the person who enlisting in the army and you can see the emotion not only in his eyes but also his parents and friends. It shows the realities of going into the army straight out of high school and to me its pretty powerful.

2B.
"Basic training" is the strongest sequence of photos because it has alot of action and along with emotion. There is a lot happening in the photo's which makes them more interesting to look at and take interest in.

2C.
The pictures worked to tell a story by being when he graduated from high school to enlisting in the army and things to him in the army in training, through Iraq then him coming home to see his family. Like every picture tells a section of the whole story, but these pictures work so well together because after one section, or one picture, the next picture comes and tells another section.

3A.
They are written in present tense.

3B.
The captions enhance the photos because they give a deeper and fuller meaning to photo, to understand what the photo is about. However, they don't tell you what happens after or right before the picture was taken.

4 *1
In chapter one Jennifer Ian girlfriend on the day before he has to leave they went to the carnival where they were alone on the fares wheel, where they had a moment and had a passionate kiss.

*2.
In chapter 2, Ian closes his eyes while he is getting his hair shaved his third day in the army. Ian has had his head shaved many times before so this is no big deal for him.

*3
In chapter 3, Ian hold a gun out of one of a hundred times before. Many things going through his mind.

5A.
These videos enhance the photographs because they basically give a detailed description about the photographs and you can hear the emotion in the voices and the background music just enhances the sadness around them.
5B.
Videos are sometimes better than photographs because they use the elements of sound along with sight to tell a story, whereas pictures just use sight.

5C.
Photos are better than videos because photographs you can see the emotion and analyze whats going on in your head but in videos not only can you see it but you can also hear it.

Marlboro Marine

A. What skills besides photography did Luis Sinco utilize to produce this slide show?

Luis Sinco used his photograph to express James Blake Miller emotions and thoughts, about his story and struggles. Luis used editing and text to show when something big happened in Blake's life. The music Luis put on the slide show was depressing. In my eyes it was how James felt.

B. What was the effect (added power or meaning) of the multimedia effects of the slide show?

The video was very sad and many people in Iraq could relate. People who were in the war or coming back from it, are never the same. Every thing they went through in the Iraq will be there in there minds until the day they die. The pictures form the war added a lot of power to this slide show because it showed how bad the conditions could be toward anything it added a lot of effect and emotion. The meaning behind the photos is telling the story of a great man that fought for our country, protecting his love ones, and my love ones.

A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshow? Why?

The most powerful image from the slideshow was the where his wife was sitting on the bed while he was looking out the window, when Blake was saying he had brought his own problems upon him and Jessica didnt deserve to have all of his problems. He seemed like he still loved her but there was so many problems going on in his life that he doesnt want to her involve.

B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?

I think the most powerful sequence was when he was riding his bike and deciding whether to ride his bike into a mountain side or ride it off the top of one. When he closed his eyes the slide show went black showing that he was closing his eyes.

C. How does the audio enhance the photographs?

Audio enhances a photo in such a way that it give you a deeper feel to the photo and it gives you an opportunity to make a connection with the photo based on your experience and how you feel.

D. How do the images work together to tell a story?

The images work together by telling Blacks life story after he felt when he was coming home from iraq. Each photo has a meaning behind it while i was watching the video all i could think to myself was i want to know more about Blake and more about each video.

Contests Preview, Show and Tell 2

This photo is very sad. An older lady that lost her loved one
maybe from the war or some tragic death. It looks like she cared
very much about this person.

This video right here is a play about grease. These people are death and
only can do sign language. Its a great play and it inspired
me alot cause I love watching the movie grease and seeing
them play with how they communicate with people is interesting.

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

What caught my eye about this photo was that it reminded me of a
tunnel and you see the light at the end of it.
This was very interesting to me because it somehow reminded me of
Christmas with all the snow.
I see lights in the background. Trees that follow a road in a town or city. A snowy dark day.
I smell cold fresh air and passably someone cooking something at there home or store. I also smell the tall snowy trees.
I hear the cold winter wind. People talking in the city or town, and cars driving place to place.
I taste the icy snow on the tip of my tongue. The taste of the stores cooking.
I feel calm and scared at the same time in this photo. Its dark but calm. The snow and lights make me feel calm while the darkness makes me a little scared.

What first caught my eye about this photo was the mist of the icy winter day. That the mist surrounded the people, horses, and the vehicle.
I see a vehicle that's being pushed with horses. A man that's maybe checking the hourses. A mist that is surrounding thim cause of there breathing.
I smell the fresh air. I also smell horses that mightive haven't tooken a bath in months.
I hear horses walking on the mudy icy road. People talking and the vehicle moving. I would also hear the wind passing through.
I taste the icy snow. The mud on the ground thats been stepped on and road on.
I feel very cold in this picture. Cause of the snow and the mist that surrounds the people and animals.

Huricane Ike

In this photo it made me think of simplicity. This picture got my attention because of the water sitting on top of the cemetery and the branches on the sides of the picture. But it stuck me cause i would never thought i would see so much water on top a grave yard where your loved one's could be barred under at, it's very sad.

To me this picture is complex and simple because the main woman is the topic cause she's crying. The people in the background are a distraction though.
